Announcer to Hang Up the Microphone
Popular Perth boxing ring announcer, Chris Korner is hanging up his
microphone but not without one last hurrah. Chris’s last Perth gig will
be the WBC Muay Thai International Titles on Saturday May 9th
at the WA Italian Club in North Perth.
Chris
first started calling boxing and martial arts bouts in 2003 and has
become a popular and familiar face in recent years at local Perth venues
like the Embassy Ballroom, Greek Hellenic and Italian Clubs. Chris
followed up his ring announcing by launching and hosting WA’s first
boxing radio show in 2004 on station SportFM.
Chris’s knowledge of the boxing game and polished voice landed him the
choice role as the Fox Sports TV commentator in the WA based film
“Two Fists One Heart” which was released in March 2009 to excellent
reviews. Since then Chris has based himself in Sydney where he has been
pursuing his acting and media career which included a role in
Underbelly which aired on April 20. Chris’s other credits include a
Farmer Wants a Wife, Home and Away, East West 101 plus several
commercials and voice overs
Chris
is stepping back from the boxing scene in WA but will still be involved
on the East Coast while he pursues acting and media opportunities in
Sydney.
“I
have loved every minute of my ring announcing here in WA and have
learned so much from it. I have met some wonderful people and made some
life long friends. I am looking forward to the 9th of May at
the Italian Club so I can thank everyone properly then” he said.
Chris
nominates interviewing and working alongside some of the greats in the
game as the highlight of his ring announcing career. “I interviewed the
late great George Grljusich on my SportFM show about his career and
later received a lot of encouragement from him shortly before his death.
He is the master when it comes to all things boxing so it was very
touching for him to be so supportive of my career”. “Also being asked by
the man himself, Anthony Mundine’s to host his tribute night in 2005 was
a great honour”.
