AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAME
by Damian Membrey
Great night for Australian Boxing was had on Saturday night at the 6th
Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame induction dinner held in the
prestigious members dining room at the “home” of Australian Sport, the
MCG.
MC for the night was
Paul Upham,
complemented by the President of the Hall of Fame
Gus Mercurio.
Gus’s passion and commitment to the sport and honouring our “Champions”
is unsurpassed and his speeches were inspiring and set the scene for a
great night.
In attendance there were 500 Boxing Fans, Boxers past and present, World
Champions, International legends, Officials, Historians and
representatives from every state in Australia.
Some Boxing legends in attendance included,
Emile Griffith, Barry Michael, Lester
Ellis, John Famechon, Lionel Rose, Kostya Tszyu, Tony Mundine, Paul
Fererri, Henry Nissen, Jeff Malcolm and
many others.
Lester Ellis
&
Jeff Malcolm
were inducted into the Hall of Fame. However the speech of the night was
delivered by
Craig Mordey,
honouring his dad
“Break Even Bill”
who was also inducted.
The Hall of Fame committee lead by President
Gus Mercurio
should be very proud in what they have achieved to date. Lets hope that
they continue to keep alive the true spirit of Boxing in the country by
honouring those that have made our sport great.
If you have not attended in previous years, it is definitely worth the
effort to attend future induction dinners.
