left- Referee Malcolm Bulner raises Mick Shaw's hand in victory. right- trainer with Gus Mercurio also raising Micks hand in victory a worthy Australian Light Welterweight Champion. ------------------------------ Australian champion Mick Shaw held his title by stopping Steven Marks in the third round after a superb show of boxing skill. Marks made a good account of himself by leading the fight which suited Shaw as he was able to counterpunch in a spectacular way and landed well placed and telling punches. Shaw had Marks in a defenceless state when the fight was stopped by referee Malcolm Bulner. We hope to see more of Mick in Melbourne before too long. See last 2 rounds Video in right column.
6x3 WARU BREAKS 11 FIGHT-LOSS RUN Great prospect Luke Moloney ended his unbeaten record by making a huge mistake leaving his head in a vulnerable position during his attacks against a very experienced Jamie Waru. In the early parts of round one both fighters landed good punches until the ending stage of the round when Waru landed a peach of an over the top right just before the round ended but was taken well by Luke. Waru came out for round two knowing he had Moloney's weak point and this was that he held his head up when moving in and when completing his good combination attacks, Waru went on a headhunt but hitting everywhere as well as twice landing big rights. In the third - Waru was now confidently attacking Moloney with both hands and finally landed a solid right to the head which sent him to the canvas and got referee Chris Anderson to send him to a neutral corner for a standing count of eight. Waru sensed the end and kept the pressure up until he got him with a hard over the top right which put Moloney away. Moloney is a brilliant prospect in professional boxing and is gifted with ability but needs to learn that good defence especially of the head is paramount in the game. See Video in right column.
