In The Australian Contender Final at the Sydney Entertainment
Centre big underdog Garth Wood (7-1, 3
KO’s) outpointed Kenyan Kariz Kariuki,
(21-8-1, 18 KO’s) in an absorbing
contest and won the first prize of
$25,000 but perhaps more importantly
secured a future match up with former
two time WBA super-middleweight champion
Anthony Mundine – with it a guaranteed
purse of $250,000. He won by split
decision over seven rounds on the
scorecards by 68-66 and 68-65 with the
third judge amazingly scoring the fight
66-68 to Kariuki at the 168 pound

A special thanks to all Aussie promoters keeping the game at

This is why the YVB website and award exist.

CONTENDER ON THE ROPES
THE credibility of television boxing show The Contender has
been rocked by allegations of "dodgy"
decisions and poor judging.
Billed as an opportunity to win $250,000
and a superfight against Anthony
Mundine, the Fox 8 program has been put
under the microscope after a string of
suspicious decisions.
Ousted fighter Junior Talipeau remains
furious about being robbed of victory

champion clearly won, including YVB.

Sensational Win for Danny Green over RJJ
Danny "the green machine" Green stopped Roy Jones Junior just
a second or two after 2 minutes of their
first round at Acer Arena Sydney.
Dec. 2nd 2009
Roy Jones
Jr. had only a few moments during a few
times to show his super speedy skills
as Danny Green was on a non stoppable
mission to put his opponent away in as
short a time as possible.
Jones was
amazed at Danny's ability to keep the
pressure needed to accomplish his
ambitions to win by stoppage as soon as
it was possible.
Danny did
not give Roy a chance to settle into the
fight on any terms but his own.
RJJ's
facial expression at times looked like
it portrayed some lack of confidence
tinted with a partial smirk, a child's
look of seemingly lost. RJJ is done in
Boxing and should retire.
The
stoppage was inevitable as RRJ was in no
state of defending himself and did not
quibble about the result.
He went as
far as indicating "I guess its
retirement after this"
Soon after
the TKO stoppage the commentators added
Hopkins must be Danny's next fight.
None of
this deters from RJJ's legend status as
he is years past his prime despite
recent wins against capable fighters.

SUPERBOXER on channel 10's 1HD
First of the series!!! from Sydney!!
ended up in quite an unexpected manner.
After what
was going as a successful fightnight the
Japanese import Kenichi Yamaguchi began
the first round with unexpected tactics
which created a confusion by rushing
like a madman towards our newest boxing
star and attempting to throw a massive
right hand which really was no threat to
Dib other than showing what sort of a
sportsman he was.
The
audience saw Dib trying to gain
composure for some time unsuccessfully
as the the Japanese fighter kept his
unusual tactics which only ended up in
placing both boxers off balance to the
point where they were falling over one
another.
This had
nothing to do with channel ten's 1HD
organization of the show nor the Sydney
promoter of the event.
These were
a select group which are hindering
Australian Boxing in NSW time and time
again.
We at YVB
look forward to seeing the next of the

rethinking where these events should be

Daniel Geale's manager lodges official protest against judge
By Bernie Pramberg
June 02, 2009Pre-fight protests against
Queensland judge Derek Milham at last
week's Anthony Mundine-Daniel Geale IBO
super-middleweight clash fell on deaf
ears.
Geale's manager Bill Treacy, who will
this week lodge an official protest to
the International Boxing Organisation on
a number of issues, has revealed he had
complained about Milham's appointment
before the bout.
"I complained, but the promoters
insisted he stay," said Treacy. "In the
past Derek Milham has been involved with
Mundine and the World Boxing Association
in certain boxing matters. I was told
that the IBO and WBA would sort out our
concerns about having him as a judge
last week. But nothing happened."
Milham, who resigned as an Australian
National Boxing Federation official two
years ago but continued to work for the
WBA, scored the fight 116-113 to
Mundine. It is alleged Milham has
assisted the Mundine camp to negotiate
past bouts within the WBA organisation.
English judge Marcus McDonnell went
114-113 for Mundine while American
Richard Green favoured Geale 115-112.
Treacy's written complaint to the IBO
will also include alleged verbal
intimidation of McDonnell during the
fight by a pro-Mundine spectator and why
referee Garry Dean had to interrupt the
fight on five occasions when tapes on
Mundine's gloves came loose.
"It's okay for the judge to say he
wasn't intimidated, but it leads to a
state of mind when someone is screaming
over your shoulder," said Treacy. "It
should not be allowed.
"We will also examine the videotape to
see if a wet towel was applied to
Mundine's gloves so the tape would not
stick."
Amazing
decisions; when two judges form the
numbers...
Mundine the new IBO world middleweight champion
Anthony Mundine has won his third world
title after claiming Daniel Geale's IBO
middleweight crown in Brisbane.
Mundine
almost had an early win when he scored a
knockdown in the second round of their
12 rounder.
Geale
quickly recovered and took the fight to
Mundine most of the time to end up with
both fighters exchanging very fast
coordinated combinations which kept the
fight very exciting and keeping the
result very much in doubt.
The rounds
were interrupted by tape unusually
coming loose and dangling from Mundine's
gloves which hindered Geale on several
occasions.
Geale the Sydney-based Tasmanian kept up
his attacks to hold his own against "The
Man" and go the distance, only to lose
by a split decision.
Mundine
now has 39 fights for 36 wins 3 losses
It was Geale's first ever loss in his
22-fight professional career, now 22
fights for 21 wins 1 loss.
YV thought
that Geale fared better in the points
department.

knockdown.
Tim now
ranked No8 in the World Boxing

succeeded.
Kane McKay made a very impressive
showing throughout with good defense and
answered all attacks by Bell landing a

contenders for fight of the year.

Mundine casts Taylor aside
February
11, 2009 - 11:59PM
Anthony Mundine won a unanimous points
decision over veteran Shannan Taylor in
their WBA middleweight fight in
Wollongong on Wednesday night.
In Mundine's first bout at the lower
weight, the two-time former super
middleweight world champion showed he
had lost none of his speed, winning
every round to likely send 36-year-old
Taylor into retirement.
In a scrappy encounter that never
reached any great heights, Mundine
landed far more punches and dictated
terms without inflicting too much damage
on the Bulli Blaster.
Taylor was lucky not to be disqualified
after using elbows, head clashes and low
blows to try to pull off an unlikely
victory and he was clearly outboxed.
Already the No.1-ranked WBA middleweight
contender, Mundine is perfectly placed
for a world title fight against Felix
Sturm in his native Germany later this
year, although a re-match with Perth's
Danny Green also appears a strong
possibility.
Mundine improved his record to 35-3,
while Taylor dropped to 48-7, with three
draws. as seen in

Ringside Report:
Armenia's Vic Darchinyan proves to much
for Jorge Arce, stopping him before the
final round to keep a firm hold of his
WBC, WBA and IBF titles
Photos by Tom Casino
/ Showtime
ANAHEIM, CA - This time, media members
picked Vic
Darchinyanto win,
and this time, they were right.
The "Raging Bull" successfully defended
his WBA, WBC and IBF titles with a TKO
stoppage over challenger
Jorge
Arceafter eleven
rounds in front of a raucous crowd of
5,450 at the Honda Center in Anaheim,
California.
Darchinyan wasn't as the stalker he was
in his last fight, which also ended in a
stoppage by knockout over
Christian
Mijares, but Darchinyan
slowly got into an offensive rhythm to
which Arce, (51-5, 39KO's) could not
answer to.
Darchniyan's momentum began in the
second round, as he began to land his
left hand with force, with Arce
returning fire, yet not as effectively
as the reigning super flyweight
champion.
Arce landed his first major punch midway
through the third round as the two
proceeded to exchange in attempts to
gain the momentum factor. Arce also had
a productive fourth round, in which he
landed a solid left hook to begin the
round, and was able to land three to
four punches in succession.
In the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds,
Arce succumbed to the constant left
hands from Darchinyan. Arce waiting to
find openings in Darchinyan's offense,
and there proved to be little.
Darchinyan was able to apply more
offense in these rounds, and won them
simply due to more punching output with
an advantage in punching power.
In the tenth, Arce was able to land an
occasional right hand, but failed to
either follow up on his punches or
seriously hurt Darchinyan, who walked
through Arce's punches with ease.
Darchinyan was able to land solid,
effective punches in the 30th minutes of
the fight, which left the right side of
Arce's face swelled.
The eleventh and decisive round was all
Darchinyan, as Arce fell prey to big
shots that left Arce's already swelling
eye in a worse condition. He was
battered against the ropes several
times, and nearly stopped before the
bell rang, ending the round.
After the round, ring side physician
Paul Wallace suggested to referee, Dr.
Lou Moret, to stop the fight based on
Arce's badly cut and swelled right eye,
and the fight was ended, with Darchinyan
first winning over his journalistic
critics, who predicted he would lose to
the then favored Mijares in November of
last year, then proving them right with
their predictions of this fight and in
the process retaining his championship
titles.
Heading into the final round,
Darchinyan, (32-1-1, 26KO's) was
massively ahead on all three judges'
scorecards, 109-100.
