ANBHOF Induction night with Gala Dinner

Saturday 10 Oct 2009

The Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame annual dinner took place in Melbourne's top AFL football ground's function room where Australian Champions were honoured and more inducted into what is now Australia's listed fighters for all time to come.

A huge amount of known faces from the last 60 years of boxing in Australia were present which made it a memorable evening for all.

Night of nights of Aussie Boxing was the best place to be on this Saturday 10th. Oct.

The main attractions were the loved former Commonwealth champion Henry Nissen and Troy Waters winner of the WBB title and having fought for the WBC AND IBF World Light Middleweight title.

HENRY THE GENTLE MAN

Henry was a TV Ringside idol back in the golden years of Boxing in Melbourne town.

Henry Nissen is one deserving fighter that gave Melbourne boxing fans so much during his career and is still doing what he does best which is charity work for homeless and other people needing help with life.

Henry is one of the nicest guys on the planet, a thorough champion in much more than can ever be expected of him.

TROY WATERS A DESERVING CHAMPION

Troy fought Felix Trinidad a Hall of Famer who went on in turn to fight Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones Jnr, Bernard Hopkins and Ronald Wright.

His birthplace was in London, England but began his fighting career in NSW Australia before his Madison Square Gardens and MGM showings.

Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame GALA DINNER 13 October 2007 M.C.G. a Boomer

***VIDEO NOW ADDED***

YVB is now  showing a video of this glorious evening on this website now that it has been edited and produced.

This was without a doubt the best of all gala dinners to date and was held in the heart of Melbourne's main sports stadium "Melbourne Cricket Ground" also known as the MCG where the grand final of the AFL took place.

The President Gus Mercurio, Brett Mc'Cormick and Frank Marr  the Vice President and secretary (in that order) were the main organizers of this unforgettable evening.

Australia's cream of Boxing's legends gathered all in one place and were happy to sign autographs for everyone that requested. by Young Victor

The video is not professionally made and really a memorable night for the writer but it is worthwhile seeing as some great fighters had been present.

Young Victor would like to take the opportunity to thank all Boxing Fraternity for the amazingly welcoming attitude they have met me with after so many years. He would also like to thank Gus Mercurio for gracing him and his wife Lynette by sitting at his table for this great function. (amazingly YV forgot to take a photo of this table.)

This picture tells its own story how passionate this embrace was by the two great Aussie Boxing contributors.

Australian National Boxing Hall Of Fame : The current Australian National Hall of Fame President, Historian Arnold Thomas and inaugural president & Chairman Of Special Events, boxing official Gus Mercurio shared the announcing honours through out the event with the assistance of key industry participants in announcing the successful inductees to each category.

ANBHOF Gala Night was held at Telstra Dome, Docklands, Melbourne. 23rd Oct. 2004.

At the WBF table my wife Lynette accompanied me.

Gus Mercurio does not seem to know what the word "help" means he almost seemed to run the inductions and the whole show single handed.

!! well almost !!

That's Gus all over, he spared no effort and the night went off like a charm.

Gus the BOSS & family man

Great story of Gus's adventures at Aussiebox

Gus is also a family man that loves his kids an example of this : read what Gus had to say about his son Paul Mercurio

Fighting Harada is the friendliest person anyone can ever meet.

Real name Masahiko Harada fought both our champions Lionel Rose (once) and Johnny Famecon (twice) in world title fights.

This is exactly how fighters meet before and after their fights but a different story in between times.

Meeting Fighting Harada is one nice experience.

From left - Leon Nissen and David Oved.

I have never seen Leon with anything but a smile on his face, that applies to his brother Henry, these are two very nice guys.

I regret not having a photo of Henry but I assure you that you are not missing anything at all as they are replicas of one another, only their mother can tell them apart.

They are both very nice and kind people to know.

I had the pleasure of meeting David Oved right at this night.

David had fights with all the best of the late 50's and early 60's George Bracken, Max Carlos,  Johhny Butterworth, Aldo Pravisani Alfie O'Sullivan and others.

Arty Scott (right) here is getting his photo taken by Lynette Young Victor's wife, he is usually on the camera taking photos of all visitors to the Past and Present Boxers reunions held 4 times a year.

Arty would give you the picture taken at the last reunion during the next.

Arty must have the kindest of hearts and I am sure everyone appreciates him as much as I do.

Fighter of all Fighters legend Frank Flannery He was in my corner with Snowy Sullivan for one of my fights.

Leon Nissen Lynette (my lovely wife for 40 years)
